Victron SmartSolar MPPT 150/70-TR Solar Charge Controller – Bluetooth, 12/24/48V
$473.00
70 amps of charge current — around 1,000W of panel on 12V. For large van and expedition roofs where solar is the primary power source, not a top-up.
This is the controller for builds where solar does the heavy lifting. 70 amps covers roughly 1,000W of panel on a 12V system, which is a fully covered van roof or a dedicated solar array on an expedition vehicle.
When solar stops being a supplement
Most overland builds treat solar as a trickle that offsets the fridge. Once you are past about 600W, the character changes: solar becomes the main source and the alternator becomes the backup. That is the point where you can run an inverter, a compressor fridge, lighting and device charging indefinitely without starting the engine, and where this size of controller earns its cost.
It is also the size you want if you spend days parked. A big array and a big controller means a battery that refills while you are at camp rather than only while you drive.
TR terminals
The TR designation means screw terminal connections rather than MC4 connectors — more flexible for custom wiring, and standard on a build where you are running your own cable rather than plugging in a pre-made panel lead.

Worth a conversation
At this size the controller is no longer the only decision — battery bank, cable sizing and fusing all have to match. Tell us what you are building and we will talk it through before you order.
