The black-bezel version of the BMV-712. Identical electronics and functions to the grey model — the only difference is the trim ring, which matters when the gauge is going into a dark galley panel or a black switch bank and you want it to disappear rather than stand out.

What it does

Measures every amp into and out of the house battery through its 500A shunt and reports a true state of charge. Voltage alone cannot do this — particularly on lithium, which holds a nearly flat voltage from 90% down to 20% and gives you almost no warning before it drops.

The round panel display shows state of charge, voltage, current and time remaining, so you check the battery by glancing at the wall rather than opening an app. Bluetooth is there as well, so you get both.

Second input

The BMV-712 has a second measuring input you can assign to starter battery voltage, midpoint voltage on a series bank, or a temperature sensor. Watching the cranking battery alongside the house bank is the common use — it tells you whether your isolator or DC-DC is behaving.

Panel or phone

If you have nowhere good to mount a round gauge, the SmartShunt does the same measuring with no display at all and costs less. If you want to see the battery without picking up your phone, this is the one.
