The Orion XS is how most overland dual-battery systems get charged. It takes power from your vehicle's alternator while the engine runs and pushes it into your auxiliary battery at up to 50 amps — far faster than a simple isolator, and with a proper charge profile rather than whatever voltage the alternator happens to be putting out.

Why it matters on a build

Modern vehicles with smart alternators vary their output voltage to save fuel, which means a plain battery isolator often never fully charges your second battery. A DC-DC charger solves that: it takes whatever the alternator gives it and delivers a correct, regulated charge to the house battery regardless.

At 50 amps it will put meaningful capacity back into a lithium or AGM house battery over a few hours of driving — enough to run a fridge, lights and a 12V system overnight without touching shore power or solar.

Good to know

Sizing is about your alternator and your wiring, not just your battery. A 50A charger needs cable and fusing rated for it.
