The BMV-712 does the same thing a SmartShunt does — measures every amp in and out of the house battery to give a true state of charge — but adds a physical display you mount where you can see it.

Display or phone?

This is the whole decision between the BMV-712 and the SmartShunt, and it is genuinely personal. A phone-only monitor means nothing to mount and nothing to cut a hole for, but you have to pick up your phone and open an app to check. A panel display means you glance at the wall on the way past and know where you stand.

Most people who have lived with both prefer the panel for daily use. In a van or a camper where the gauge ends up in the galley, you check the battery twenty times a day without thinking about it — and that changes how you manage power. On a truck build where there is nowhere sensible to put a round gauge, the SmartShunt wins.

You get both here: the panel plus full Bluetooth through VictronConnect.

What it shows

State of charge percentage, voltage, current in or out, amp-hours consumed, and time remaining at the current draw. It also has a second input for monitoring a starter battery voltage or a battery temperature sensor — useful if you want to watch the cranking battery as well as the house bank.
