A rechargeable electric arc lighter — no butane, no flint, no fuel to evaporate.

Disposable lighters fail in three predictable ways: they run out, they leak empty in storage, and they will not stay lit in wind. An arc lighter has none of those failure modes.

The arc is unaffected by wind, which is where ordinary lighters are at their worst — exactly when you are trying to start a fire in weather.

USB rechargeable, so it tops up from the vehicle or a power bank. A charge lasts through a long trip of normal use.

Keep a ferro rod as well. The lighter is better nine times out of ten, and the striker is the one that works when the battery is flat.
