It redirects a winch line around a corner so you can pull from an angle, and running the line through it and back to the vehicle roughly doubles your pulling power — at half the line speed. Slower, but it gets vehicles out that a straight pull will not.

16,000 lb suits a winch in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb range. Match the block to the winch, not to the vehicle.

Lay a recovery damper — a heavy blanket or purpose-made bag — over the line before any pull under load. If something lets go, it drops the line instead of letting it whip.
