A hitch-mounted spare tire carrier. It slots into the receiver and takes the spare off the vehicle — out of the bed, off the tailgate, off the roof.

The problem it solves grows with your tires. A 35 or 37 inch spare will not fit under most trucks any more once they are lifted, and putting it in the bed costs you the space you built the truck for. On the roof it is a two-person lift and it ruins the centre of gravity. On a hitch carrier it sits low, comes off easily, and the bed stays yours.

On an SUV the argument is even simpler than on a truck: there is no bed, so a big spare has to go inside with the passengers and the gear, or on the roof. This puts it outside and behind.
