Five anodized aluminium carabiners: two 4 mm, two 6 mm and one 8 mm.

Three sizes in one bag is the sensible way to buy these, because the right size is entirely about what you are clipping to. A 4 mm will not go round a pack haul loop; an 8 mm is absurd on a zip pull.

Spread them around rather than keeping them together — one on the camp box, one on a pack, one on the dog lead, one in the glovebox. They cost about a dollar each and they are only useful where they already are.

Coghlan's states plainly: "Please note that they are not intended for climbing."

Not for climbing. Not for anything that holds a person. These are accessory clips. A certified climbing carabiner is rated to about 20 kN — roughly 4,500 lb — and carries that rating stamped on its spine. These are rated in tens of pounds. The gap is not a margin, it is two different objects that happen to look alike. Clip gear with them; never clip yourself, a hammock, a swing or a load above anyone.
