In the cold, alcohol does not vaporize readily and a spirit burner can be slow or stubborn to light. The pre-heater is a small brass cup that sits under the burner: you put a little fuel in it, light that, and it warms the burner for about two minutes until the burner takes over properly.

Trangia publish it as usable from +5 °C (41 °F). For anyone running a Trangia in shoulder season or at altitude, it is the cheapest useful accessory in the range.
