O-rings fail two ways: they get nipped on assembly because they were dry, or they get attacked by the wrong lubricant and swell. Silicone grease solves both — it lets the ring slide into its groove without tearing, and it is compatible with rubber rather than hostile to it.

Where you need it: water pump and filter housings, propane fittings, shower and tap seals, fridge door gaskets, air compressor fittings, anything with a rubber seal you are taking apart and putting back together.

If you have ever rebuilt a water pump and had it weep afterwards, a dry O-ring was probably the reason.
