The SCAR 20P is a 20,000 lb. recovery winch with synthetic rope and a wireless remote.

A winch is the one piece of recovery gear that works when nobody else is around. Straps, ropes and shackles all need a second vehicle. A winch needs a tree, a rock, or a buried anchor — and your own patience.

20,000 lb is heavy-truck territory: a loaded one-ton, an expedition rig, a trailer-hauling setup, or anything where you expect to be recovering others as well as yourself. Overkill for most builds, and exactly right for a few.

Synthetic rope vs steel cable is the real decision. Synthetic is lighter, easier on the hands, floats, and if it parts under load it drops rather than snapping back — which is why most people who recover regularly run it. Steel is cheaper, shrugs off abrasion on rock, and does not degrade in UV. Steel is the tougher material; synthetic is the safer one.

The wireless remote matters more than it sounds. It lets you stand clear of the line and still see what the vehicle is doing — rather than crouching at the bumper, in the one place you should not be while a line is under load.

Always pull from a rated recovery point. A tow ball, a bumper bracket or a factory tie-down loop is not one. Rated points are bolted to the frame and marked as such — if you are not sure what your vehicle has, find out before you need it, not while you are buried to the axles.

Lay a recovery damper — a heavy blanket or purpose-made bag — over the line before any pull under load. If something lets go, it drops the line instead of letting it whip.
