15" is for the builds with the most in the way: a bed rack sitting over a tall camper shell, a roof top tent mounted on the same rack as the awning, or a rail line the awning has to clear before it can open.

Choosing a height: more height than you need is not free — it puts the awning further out on a longer lever. Measure the obstruction, order the shortest mount that clears it, and send us a photo of the rack if you want a second opinion before you buy.
