A straight-sided jar with a very wide opening and a recessed lid top so they stack. Straight sides mean you can get a spoon or a scoop right to the bottom corner, which jars with a shoulder will not let you do.

For a camp kitchen or a workshop drawer these are the right container for anything dry or thick: ground coffee, spice blends, grease, balm, hardware, O-rings, fuses.

Not for liquids, and this is the manufacturer’s own position, not our caution. They state the jars are “not liquid leakproof” and “not recommended for liquid transport,” and add that they have not been tested for liquid containment. Do not put anything pourable in one and put it in a vehicle. If you need leakproof, the HDPE bottles are the ones that carry that guarantee.

Autoclavable, which is unusual here. This is the one family in the range the manufacturer states can be autoclaved repeatedly — on this size, remove the closure and autoclave it separately.

What the manufacturer does and does not publish

This is lab-quality bottle stock — the same molding Nalgene supplies to laboratories, which is exactly why it is good for the field. Being honest about the data that comes with it: the manufacturer publishes the resin, the capacity, the closure size and the dimensions, and lists compliance with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520 and USP Class VI. It does not publish a country of origin, an upper temperature limit, or a BPA statement for this line. The BPA-free language you will see on Nalgene’s consumer bottles is a claim about those bottles, and we are not going to borrow it for this one. If any of those three points decides the purchase for you, ask us first and we will put the question to the supplier.
