Two reasons people buy these. The first is replacement — poles are the part of an awning that gets bent, lost at a campsite, or left standing in wind it should not have been left standing in. The second is height: a 3.0 metre pole reaches the ground from a taller mounting point, which is what you need if the awning sits on a bed rack, a roof rack over a camper shell, or a van.

Longer poles also let you pitch the canopy flatter, which puts more shade on the ground and less of it up the side of the vehicle.
