GSI's premium camp knife kit. 11.6 x 7.5 x 2 in.

Includes: 3.5 in. paring knife with sheath, 6 in. Santoku chef's knife with Granton scallops, 6 in. serrated bread knife with sheath, a bamboo cutting board (7 x 11 in. prep surface), a knife sharpener and a dish cloth, in a recycled (rPET) cloth case.

The Granton scallops on the chef's blade are the real upgrade. Those are the dimples ground into the side of the blade. They break the suction between the steel and whatever you are slicing, so potato, courgette and cheese fall off the knife instead of clinging to it. On a camp table with one board and no space, that is the difference between cooking and scraping.

The sharpener is the other thing the cheaper set does not have. A knife that goes dull halfway through a week is more dangerous than a sharp one, and nobody packs a stone.

Wood handles and a bamboo board rather than nylon and polyethylene — this is the set you buy because you want it to look right on the table as well as work.

A note on price: GSI's own site currently lists this set at $119.95. Our supplier's price is $99.95 and that is what we have charged.

GSI do not publish a blade steel grade for their knives — their specification says only "Stainless Steel". We are not going to invent one.

Dry it properly. GSI's own warning: "Blades may corrode if left immersed in water." Wash, dry, sheath. That is the whole maintenance routine.
