A solo cook kit built around one good idea: the 1 liter pot boils your water for a pouch meal, then the lid inverts and the pot slips into an insulating sleeve, and now it is your mug. One object, two jobs, nothing extra in the pack.

The pot gripper is silicone and insulated, and it attaches magnetically to your fuel canister while you cook, which sounds like a gimmick until the first time you are not patting the ground for it in the dark. The folding spork compacts to 3.7 inches and extends and locks to a 6.1 inch fork-spoon — long enough to reach the bottom of a freeze-dried pouch without wearing it on your knuckles. Packed, the kit is 6.5 x 6.1 x 3.5 inches. Hard-anodized aluminum, recycled polypropylene and stainless steel.

Halulite is GSI's hard-anodized aluminum. In GSI's words it “provides superior conductivity to titanium while still being incredibly light” — which in practice means water comes to a boil faster on less fuel than a titanium pot of the same size, for a lot less money. Hard anodizing is an electrochemical treatment of the aluminum surface, not a coating, so there is nothing to wear through.

Care

Hand wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly; avoid abrasive cleaners. Wash it before first use with hot water and mild detergent and dry immediately. Let every part dry completely before storing — a damp pot in a stuff sack is how aluminum ends up stained.

GSI's caution for the Halulite line: never heat it to extreme temperatures or let it boil dry; pot and lid are intended for camp stovetop use only; not for use with microwave ovens, conventional ovens or open campfires; the handle can get hot, so never expose it to direct flame; and do not try to cool it rapidly.
