GSI Enamelware Coffee Percolator — 12 Cup, Blue

$43.95

A 12-cup enameled steel camp percolator with a glass PercView knob so you can watch it perk. Blue. 8.7 x 7 x 10.2 in., 1 lb 10 oz.

SKU: 148338 Categories: , Brand:

The percolator that looks right on a camp stove because it is the one your family already had. 12 cups of old-fashioned perked coffee, in blue speckled enamel over heavy-gauge steel, with GSI's clear PercView cap in the lid so you can watch the color come up and know when it is done. Comes with the pot and the brew insert.

Enameled steel: a heavy-gauge steel body with a glass enamel fired onto it, kiln-hardened twice at over 1000°F so it stands up to scratches and chipping, with three-ply construction to even out the heat and a bright stainless rim. It does not hold flavors and it cleans up with a sponge. The honest weakness is impact — drop it on a rock and the enamel can chip, and a chip exposes bare steel that will rust. Keep a chipped spot dry between trips and it will serve for years.

What GSI means by a “cup”

A percolator cup is not a mug, and it never has been. GSI do not print a per-cup figure anywhere, but on the stainless models they do publish a capacity in liters, and the arithmetic lands at roughly 5 fluid ounces per cup. So a 12-cup percolator holds about 1.8 liters — call it six generous mugs, not twelve. That is our arithmetic from GSI's own capacity figures, not a GSI specification, and we would rather you knew before it arrived than after.

On heat sources, straight with you: GSI's own page for this piece names no heat source at all — not stovetop, not camp stove, not campfire. Their stainless percolators are the ones they put in a fire in their own marketing. We are not going to tell you enamelware is campfire gear when GSI will not say it, so treat this as a stove and camp-stove pot. If you want a definite answer on open flame, ask us and we will get it from GSI.

Safety — the one that matters

Never open the lid or remove the PercView top while it is heating. That is GSI's own instruction in capitals, and it is the one that causes scalds. Do not overfill it, do not let it boil dry, and if it overflows turn the stove off and let the whole thing cool before you touch it. Brewed coffee and grounds are very hot. Keep it away from children and pets, let it cool before cleaning or taking it apart, and never try to cool it quickly.

Care

Hand wash with warm, soapy water and dry thoroughly; avoid abrasive cleaners. GSI do not list any of their coffee gear as dishwasher safe, and several pages warn that dishwashers may age components early. Hand wash it.
