The Explorer is a soft shell cap — a lightweight aluminium frame with a Black Diamond canvas cover, rather than a fixed hard shell.

Why choose soft over hard: a hard cap is permanent, heavy, and takes two people and a spare afternoon to remove. The Explorer is light enough for one person to lift off, and it collapses fully so you get the whole bed back for a lumber run without taking anything off the truck. If your bed does two jobs, that flexibility is worth more than the extra security of a hard shell.
