Steel instead of glass is the whole idea. A glass mirror in a pack is a bag of broken glass waiting for one hard landing. Steel takes the same abuse and stays a mirror.

It is also the one you can hand to a child, keep in a first aid kit, or leave loose in a camp box without a second thought.

The lanyard hole means it hangs off a tent loop or a branch at face height, which is the only way shaving or getting grit out of an eye actually works outdoors.

Steel reflects slightly softer than glass. For shaving, checking a tick bite or getting something out of your eye, it is entirely good enough.

Before first use, peel the protective film off the front. Coghlan's ships it covered and people forget.

This is a grooming mirror, not a signal mirror. Coghlan's does not give it an aiming hole or a sighting grid, and without one you cannot reliably aim a reflection at an aircraft. If you want a mirror for rescue signalling, buy a purpose-built signal mirror — do not rely on this one.
