An ultra-fine head net with an elasticized neck, built to fit over most headgear.
1,600 holes per square inch. This is the fine end of the range and it exists for one reason: no-see-ums go straight through ordinary mosquito mesh. If you camp near water, in the Sierra at dusk, or anywhere the locals talk about "punkies", this is the net to own.
It is also flame retardant, which matters more than it sounds — a head net is worn around a fire, and ordinary synthetic mesh melts.
Five dollars for the finest mesh Coghlan's makes is the best value in this whole category. The more expensive Deluxe net is coarser; what you pay extra for there is the frame that holds the mesh off your face, not finer netting.
Wear it over a brimmed hat.
How to read mesh density. Coghlan's states holes per square inch on every net, and it is the number that decides what gets through. Around 180 holes stops mosquitoes, which is all most people need. No-see-ums — biting midges, punkies, sand flies — are small enough to walk through standard mosquito mesh, and that is the entire reason the 1150 and 1600-hole products exist. If you have ever been bitten through a head net, this is why.
Coghlan's does not publish a permethrin or insecticide treatment for this product, so treat it as plain netting.
