Coghlan’s Mosquito Head Net 2.0
$4.49
300-hole polyester mesh, four and a half dollars. The one to keep in every pack.
A fine polyester mosquito head net with an elasticized neck, sized to fit over most headgear.
300 holes per square inch. That is finer than the mesh on a sleeping net and it stops mosquitoes and black flies without turning the world grey.
At this price there is no reason not to own three. Head nets are the piece of gear you do not think about until the evening you need one, and by then the shop is shut. One in each pack, one in the truck.
The elastic neck is what makes it work — it seals against your collar instead of letting things crawl up under the net.
Wear it over a brimmed hat. Without a brim the mesh sits on your face and the mosquitoes bite straight through it.
How to read mesh density. Coghlan's states holes per square inch on every net, and it is the number that decides what gets through. Around 180 holes stops mosquitoes, which is all most people need. No-see-ums — biting midges, punkies, sand flies — are small enough to walk through standard mosquito mesh, and that is the entire reason the 1150 and 1600-hole products exist. If you have ever been bitten through a head net, this is why.
Coghlan's does not publish a permethrin or insecticide treatment for this product, so treat it as plain netting.
