This is the stake you want when the forecast is wrong.

Most tents fail in wind the same way. A short stake works loose in soft or sandy ground, that corner starts to lift, the tent begins to flap, and the flapping is what breaks the pole. People end up abandoning the tent at two in the morning and sleeping in the truck — and it started with a stake that let go.

Eighteen inches of steel changes that. It reaches past the dry surface layer into soil that still has some grip, and there is enough length above and below the holding point that it does not pivot. Two per pack, which is usually what you need: the two corners taking the wind.

Use these on

• The windward corners of any tent, always
• Awning legs and guy lines — a 270 awning is a sail
• Sand, loose soil, soft ground, anywhere short stakes pull

Carry four and use them where it matters, not everywhere. The standard stakes are fine for the sheltered side.
