Coghlan’s Carabiner — 8 mm with Key Ring
$3.49
One larger clip with a key ring on it. Three and a half dollars.
A single anodized aluminium carabiner, 3.2 in. x 1.6 in. (8.1 x 4.2 cm), with a spring-loaded closure. Evening Green. Key ring included.
The key ring is the whole idea. Keys on a split ring that clips to a belt loop stop being the thing you pat your pockets for at a trailhead — and a carabiner is far faster to work than threading a key onto a ring every time.
Coghlan's suggests attaching gear to a pack, hanging things from a clothesline, and whatever else camp throws at you. In practice this size is the useful one: big enough to take a gloved hand, small enough to live on a zip pull.
Coghlan's states plainly: "These carabiners are not intended for climbing."
Not for climbing. Not for anything that holds a person. These are accessory clips. A certified climbing carabiner is rated to about 20 kN — roughly 4,500 lb — and carries that rating stamped on its spine. These are rated in tens of pounds. The gap is not a margin, it is two different objects that happen to look alike. Clip gear with them; never clip yourself, a hammock, a swing or a load above anyone.
