Rapid deflators work differently from the screw-on adjustable type: they remove the valve core, dumping air far faster than it can escape past a core. On big tires that is the difference between a couple of minutes and ten.

Why this matters: dropping tire pressure on the trail lengthens the contact patch, which gives you traction in sand, rock and mud that no amount of throttle will. The catch is the other half — you have to put the air back before you touch pavement. Low pressure at highway speed builds heat, and heat is what destroys tires and unseats beads.

Aluminium bodied, with the core captive so you are not hunting for a valve core in the dirt — which is the failure mode that makes people distrust this style of deflator.

Rapid or adjustable? Adjustable deflators set themselves and stop; rapid deflators are much quicker but you watch the gauge and stop them yourself. If you air down constantly and value speed, take these. If you would rather set it and forget it, take the adjustable kit.
