A specialist unit: it takes 12V from a standard vehicle electrical system and charges a 48V battery bank. 48V house systems are becoming more common on large builds because higher voltage means lower current for the same power, which means thinner cable, smaller fuses and less voltage drop over long runs.

Why anyone runs 48V

Power is volts times amps. Pulling 2,000W from a 12V bank means roughly 170 amps — that is heavy cable, big fuses and real heat. The same 2,000W at 48V is about 42 amps, which you can move on far smaller wire. On a long-wheelbase build, a van conversion or an expedition truck with runs of 15 feet or more, 48V stops being exotic and starts being sensible.

Isolated and smart
